Data and Report from S&T Project 1877: Cost Modeling of Membrane Desalination Processes using Reclamation's WaTER model
The project evaluated the cost-benefit tradeoffs of two alternative treatment trains for treating water from Foss Reservoir in Oklahoma at the Foss Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which currently uses an electrodialysis reversal process to treat brackish surface water to potable water standards. The alternative treatment scenarios were evaluated using Reclamation's Water Treatment Estimating Routine (WaTER), which is an excel-based tool that calculates order-of-magnitude level costs for common drinking water treatment processes using empirical costs curves. Treatment scenarios were based on work completed under Desalination and Water Purification Research (DWPR) project # R16AP0000 that evaluated the fouling control and water quality improvements of an electrocoagulation and microfiltration process compared to microfiltration alone as pre-treatment to nanofiltration on brackish surface water collected from Foss Reservoir. The project indicated that addition of electrocoagulation allowed for higher flux (e.g., smaller systems) in downstream microfiltration and nanofiltration processes. Therefore, this work evaluated if the additional capital and operational costs of electrocoagulation offset the operational and maintenance (O&M) savings from improved flux in the full treatment train. Data includes inputs and outputs to the WaTER model and the final report.
