Data and Report from S&T Project 21049: Improving Subsurface Characterization with Monitoring While Drilling Technology
The use of Monitoring While Drilling (MWD) for geotechnical explorations represents the state-of-the-art in data acquisition and value-added information gathering; however, unlike many cutting-edge technologies, it utilizes proven hardware, albeit in a unique way, with minimal changes to current processes or training for field personnel. Combining the MWD data with geologic logs and other site characterization tools is the future of site exploration and, given the rapid adoption across other industries (oil and gas, grouting, drilling for blasting, etc.), is a tool that geotechnical engineers can look forward to incorporating into their standard processes in the very near future.
