Data and Report from S&T Project 24025: Recommended Monitoring and Response Guidance for Addressing Surface and Benthic Algal Blooms Within Reclamation’s California Great Basin
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are an ongoing concern throughout the world and pose a threat to Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) mission in protecting water. Understanding and developing effective management and detection protocols is important for mitigating potentially life-threatening exposure to the American public, wildlife, pets, and livestock. This scoping project identifies current monitoring methods and recommendations for establishing a monitoring program based on current literature. Muli-tiered monitoring approaches will need to be uniquely adjusted to fit each waterbody’s need. A remote sensing approach in conjunction with in situ sampling is recommended for early detection of blooms. Nutrient management programs are recommended for HAB mitigation through partnering with other agencies. Early HAB detection and management are important elements in preserving the water quality within BOR reservoirs and avoiding liability for downstream water quality issues.
