Report from S&T Project 22081: Utilization of Trained Canines to Detect Leaks in Water Pipelines
This research provided an initial evaluation of the use of a canine leak detection service with two field demonstrations at Reclamation facilities. The canine leak detection method is a useful tool for identifying potential non-surfacing leaks to improve pipeline inspection and monitoring due to its low risk and effort. Since it requires walking the alignment it has the added benefit of discovering leaks or other issues that are visible but not yet discovered due to the remoteness and accessibility of the infrastructure. Market research found that some water entities have exposed sections of pipe based on canine alerts and have confirmed active leaks with a spatial accuracy of within 5 feet from the alert location.
